Whether it's Tom and Jerry Tales, Tom and Jerry Kids, or the shorts from the golden age of cartoons, let's discuss anything T&J.

Ever since I was 8, I loved Tom and Jerry. Along with greatly timed slapstick, they managed to avoid being one sided on who the hero is, unlike Herman and Katnip. On one hand, Jerry's trying to eat, but Ont the other hand, Tom wants his job.

IMHO the worst versions were Filmation (1981-82) and the Gene Deitch/William L. Snyder (1961-62).

Filmation was just...annoying with their stock footage being repeated endlessly, and Deitch/Snyder REALLY liked to do reverb/echo in the sound effects, yuck.

Tom and Jerry Kids has gotten a pretty bad rep, but I didn't mind the show.

I agree. Even with the violence toned down, it still kept the general aesthetic of the shorts. At least it was better than the 70s version, where Jerry wore a bowtie and was friends with Tom.

Maybe they decided to call a truce and see if they could work together. The only time Tom chased Jerry in the 70's series was in the opening sequence.

I agree. While most of the reboots aren't bad, they can never capture the magic of Will Hanna and Joseph Barbara. The only one that came close was Tom and Jerry Tales, but even then it wasn't the same. Also, I always skip the warnings on the DVD since I know better about other races and just want to get on to the cartoons.

On the back of a Spotlight Collection case I have, it says:

"Tom and Jerry Spotlight Collection 2 Is Intended for the Adult Collector and May Not Be Suitable for Children."

Bitter moms against cartoon violence have something to do with the way cartoons are now.

Because of that, the 1970s Tom and Jerry show made them best pals and gave Jerry a bow tie for some reason. Even the kids hated it, so it was gone in a flash. Also, cartoon censorship is actually looser now than it was back in the day. With what Adventure Time and Regular Show have been getting away with, it seems that you can get away with more now for some reason.

Tom and Jerry put their differences aside in the pre-1970s cartoons, like the ones where they were babysitters. But having them as friends in full episodes just doesn't seem to work.

I agree. The real reason it didn't work in the 70s version was that the material wasn't that funny, and they never fought in any episode. However, when it was done in the classics, like Busy Buddies, Ol' Rockin' Chair Tom, and the end of Night Before Christmas, it turned out great.
