One of my favorite Animaniacs episodes for years now, especially the Dan Anchorman performance by the late, great Phil Hartman.

Funny enough, it was the "original" version of this segment that I saw on TV (in the UK) and recorded back in '97 or so.

I seem to remember watching the original back when it first aired, but it's been so long ago that I can't be sure. I don't think I noticed when they changed it, though. I was never watching for stuff like that, so it would have gone right by me.

This episode always struck me as being a bit meaner than others, even after the changes were made. Maybe they just didn't do enough to portray the anchorman as a bad guy, but it always seemed to me that the Warners were a bit harsh on him compared to what he did to them, stiffing them on a tip for a late meal. In that regard, I don't think it was one of the better cartoons because it put the Warners in a bit of a bad light.

Yeah. In the one cartoon (forget the name!) where Yakko fake delivered a message (it actually contained his sibs) to the candy store owner he didn't get a tip. but then they were already getting back at him for something else.

Yakko: How 'bout a tip?
Flaxseed: Don't eat lead.
Yakko reacts to camera.

Favorite quotes are

Dan: I'll finally give you that tip I owe ya.
Yakko: Really? Then we're sorry we called you cheap.
Wakko: Yeah, you're probably very generous... we hope.

And

Dot: Now for our segment on why people dont tip!
Yakko: You see, the reason people do not give a proper extra payment for services, in other words a "Tip" is because they are extremely cheap...
Dot: Would you say newsmen are extremely cheap?
Yakko: No, except of course Dan Anchorman.

You must not remember it as well because even in the edited version they were far worse. The Warners take a bite of Dan's sandwich , show it to him on Dot's tongue, then demand a tip. Even though this to portray Dan Anchorman as a complete jerk, he has every right not to tip them. Even so, there are a few funny scenes such as the "Why people don't tip" segment and the protest scene. "We protest that Dan Anchorman won't take coleslaw instead of pickles!"

The only Animaniacs episode that was ever censored, and even then I think it was by the choice of the showrunners. Unfortunately, I can't really say anything good about the story or the gags in this one because it comes across as mockingly cruel in both versions. The only saving grace to this cartoon is the fluid Startoons animation, but not even that can save this trainwreck of an episode.

Seriously, this episode makes those Mindy and Buttons cartoons look like masterpieces in comparison.

According to Animaniacs wikia, it was Speilberg who ordered the cuts to this episode. You know you've messed up when Speilberg objects to it. The violence and a few lines was taken out to keep the Warners from coming off as vicious. If they made Dan provoke the Warners, this episode could've been great. I disagree that this is worse than a Buttons and Mindy cartoon. At least this had Phil Hartman and someone who sort of deserved his treatment. The Buttons and Mindy shorts were mostly just 6 minutes of ways to torture Buttons. At least the Kids Wb era improved on that aspect.

I guess we'll just have to disagree on that. There is one nitpicky detail I'd like to point out, though. Fast forward to the Kids WB episode "The Sound of Warners". In that episode, we learn that the Warners do not prokove others unless they have been prokoved themselves. Well, this episode, "Broadcast Nuisance", brings that fact into question. Here, it was the Warners that provoked Dan first, not the other way around. They were supposed to just deliver the man his lunch, then they ate it right in front of him and started demanding a tip. I'm not defending Dan Anchorman because he was still acting like a jerk beforehand, but keep in mind the Warners weren't there at first to see his jerkish behavior. How did they know he was a jerk? Just because they're toons doesn't mean they're omnipotent. There are still some pretty good gags here, like when the Warners are tampering with things in the control room or the protest line outside the studio. But my main problem with this episode are the continuity issues present.

Even then, I thought that that rule was shoehorned in just to create conflict. Balony and Mr. Director didn't provoke the Warners at all, but they still tortured them anyways. It seems that that the rule was less that they had to be provoked and more of that the victim had to be either a jerk or a nuisance.

Silly past me has struck again. Why was I trying to argue continuity in a Warner Brothers cartoon? :|

But I still hate this episode.

I have no idea. WB never even had continuity, so that was just nitpicking. Still, the Animaniacs writers bible says that they can't attack unprovoked, so they still were breaking an important rule of the show.
